I came to the US 50 + years ago from Cuba. I have been a US permanent resident for 50 years and no longer have a Cuban passport. How can I travel to Italy?

Can US permanent residents travel to Italy?

Do green card holders (US Permanent Residents) need a visa for Italy? Sadly yes, you need to get an Italian Schengen visa if you would like to visit Italy with a permanent residence or green card. Only full US citizens who hold the US passport can visit Europe without a visa.

Can I go outside of Italy with receipts of Permesso Soggiorno?

Once you are granted the standard Permesso, you can travel freely in and out of Italy and the Schengen area provided you always bring along the original Permesso together with your passport. If a standard Permesso is not granted, you can stay in Italy with the receipt and leave the country, but cannot re-enter Italy.

Can non US citizens travel to Italy?

All non-residents are required to complete a declaration of presence (dichiarazione di presenza). Prospective residents or anyone intending to stay in Italy for longer than 90 days must obtain a permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno).
