Must US-issued enhanced driver licenses have a full middle name?

I understand that a US-issued enhanced driver license (or ID card) is a special form of REAL ID. The difference from regular REAL ID is the holder not only had to prove legal presence in the US, but that the holder is a US citizen or national.
I read the final rules about REAL ID and they seem to say that the face of the license or ID card must have the person's full middle name(s), not initials, unless the name is so long that the middle name has to be reduced to an initial in order to fit. But I'm a notary and see many enhanced driver licenses; they often have a middle initial instead of a middle name.
Are people with just a middle initial instead of a full middle name at risk of extra delay when returning to the US by land or water from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean?

Is middle name mandatory in USA?
Do You Need a Middle Name? You absolutely do not need to choose a middle name when deciding on a baby name. Middle names are optional. You can simply choose a baby name with a first name and last name if you so desire.Do you have to use your middle name?
The Social Security Administration does not consider a middle name or suffix as part of an individual's legal name. But many other legal sources say a full legal name includes middle name. In general, it's probably best to include your middle name if the form asks for full legal name.Does full name include middle name?
So, for example, if your full name were “John Fred SMITH” (your surname being “SMITH”), then your first name (in full) would be “John Fred”. Legally speaking, there is no such thing as a middle name, so you'd simply have a first name made up of two names (“John Fred”).What do you put if you have no middle name?
