I am spending a week in Ukraine as part of an LGBT performing arts group. We will be under the protection of the US Embassy and will be visiting Lviv and Kiev. I know very little about the region, but I am aware that gay people are not necessarily treated with kindness there. What should I be aware of while there? Am I right to be apprehensive?

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine now?

We continue to advise do not travel to Ukraine due to the volatile security situation and armed conflict. You need to carefully consider how and when you're going to leave. Transport routes will be significantly disrupted. Ukraine airspace is closed.

Is Ukraine still in quarantine?

Ukraine is under an adaptive quarantine until March 31, 2022. Wearing masks is mandatory in public transportation and indoor public places. Individuals and establishments can be fined for not complying.

Are Ukrainian citizens safe?

Ukraine - AVOID ALL TRAVEL Avoid all travel to Ukraine due to the Russian military invasion. Your safety is at high risk, particularly if you engage in active combat. If you are in Ukraine, you should shelter in a secure place unless it is safe for you to leave the country.

Can you go and fight in Ukraine?

Several towns and cities in southern and eastern Ukraine are temporarily under Russian control. There is a real risk to life. If you travel to Ukraine to fight, or to assist others engaged in the war, your activities may amount to offences under UK legislation and you could be prosecuted on your return to the UK.
